Raptiva pulled

The manufacturers of Raptiva (efalizumab) announced a voluntary withdrawal of the product from the U.S. marketplace due to increasing concerns about a serious infection known as progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. This typically fatal infection was reported in at least three individuals treated with Raptiva. This risk proved to be too great compared to the potential benefit of treatment with Raptiva. For those of you under treatment with this medication, call your doctor at your earliest convenience to find a new treatment. It is NOT recommended that you immediately stop treatment with Raptiva without seeking advice from your physician. Sudden withdrawal of Raptiva is associated with significant worsening of psoriasis and alternate therapy is strongly recommended.

New warnings from the FDA about botulinum toxin (Botox)

The FDA has issued new warnings about the use of botulinum toxin (Botox).  Most of the information comes from the use of the medication in higher doses for patients with spasticity and NOT from the use of the medication for wrinkles and folds of the face.  If you have questions about your treatments with botulinum toxin, please call our office.

Dysport is on its way

The long-awaited competitor to Botox has received FDA approval. Known as Dysport in the U.K., it was believed that it would be called Reloxin. Instead, it will retain the name Dysport when it becomes commercially available in 1 to 2 months. With this approval, the FDA has also reviewed the safety information for all botulinum toxin products (Myobloc, Dysport and Botox) and issued new information as well as instructions to the manufacturers to update the labeling information to include recent safety data.

Dysport was studied at Therapeutics Clinical Research and we want to thank those of you who helped by participating in the research studies that led to this approval. Please refer back to our website to find out when Dysport will become available.

National Psoriasis Walk Gets a New Name and Look

Beginning July 1, 2009, the National Psoriasis Walk for Awareness will be called the Walk to Cure Psoriasis. The National Psoriasis Foundation made the change to emphasize expanding research to find a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. The revamped logo represents their new direction, and better identify their commitment to fund research in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis--and put an end to these devastating diseases.

Even with the new name and logo, the walks will remain the same fun, family-friendly events featuring food, live entertainment and opportunities to connect with the community.

Step Out Walk to Fight Diabetes

Therapeutics proudly joined the over one thousand walkers at the American Diabetes Association's "Step Out" Walk to Fight Diabetes" at Liberty Station on October 25th.

At the Therapeutics booth, the walkers learned about treatment opportunities for diabetics with foot ulcers available through research studies at our clinic.

Ligia Iova and her daughter Francesca joined TCR staff Geri Taitano and Rebecca Pruett in the walk to fight Diabetes at Liberty Station. The women also helped host an informational booth and provided sunscreen and other skin care goodies to fellow walkers.
